Opinion | Maximizing Profits at the Patients’ Expense

To the Editor:Re “Patients Hit With Big Bills While Insurers Reap Fees” (front page, April 7):Chris Hamby’s investigation uncovers the hard truth for patients who receive care from providers outside their insurance network. While most of us try to save out-of-pocket costs by using in-network health professionals and hospitals, it’s not always possible. Health price transparency is improving, but it’s outrageous that even two years after the No Surprises Act passed, everyone except the patient knows the price of a procedure or doctor’s visit in advance, leaving patients unpleasantly surprised. The writer is senior director of Health Care Campaigns for U.S. PIRG. To the Editor:This is just the latest example of the schemes deployed by insurers to maximize profits by cutting reimbursements to physicians and shifting medically necessary health care costs onto patients.

While anyone can feel limerence, Taylor, who specializes in treating neurodivergent clients, told Business Insider that people with traits of ADHD and autism (or AuDHD, a combination of both disorders) are more prone to experiencing limerence. Limerence is more obsessive than a regular crushCrushes, even if ultimately unrequited, are usually at least somewhat fun, Taylor said. AdvertisementBut limerence can be "confusing because it becomes almost obsessive, like an object of desire," Taylor said. Coworker limerence, for example, can act as an intense distraction from other issues at work (or outside of it). Limerence keeps you stuckPatterns of limerence can keep you from finding stability and happiness, whether you're single or in a relationship, Taylor said.

A hotter and stormier world is making life unpleasantly exciting for shareholders, as Hawaiian Electric Industries (HE.N) shows. Yet while European firms have buried power lines underground to avoid damage from storm and fires, American utilities have generally balked. The firm said a second fire began in the same area several hours later, after the utility had turned off local power lines. Separately, Hawaiian Electric Industries, the parent company of Hawaiian Electric, said on Aug. 24 it had suspended its dividend. The company said HEI had withdrawn $170 million and Hawaiian Electric had withdrawn $200 million from their existing revolving unsecured credit facilities to strengthen their balance sheets.

It’s not that the urge to multitask is anything new. One study of drivers found only 2.5 percent of people showed no performance decrease when attempting two tasks at once. The rest of us just end up doing everything worse. Yet the pressure to multitask can still often seem like something imposed on us from outside. Burdened by so many demands at work, you can feel as though you’ve no choice but to split your attention among them.

Dara Khosrowshahi told The Wall Street Journal he encountered problems that discouraged drivers. He was surprised to find out just how many issues there were – and how unpleasant some riders could be. Khosrowshahi told the Journal he had a five-star rating for the 100-odd rides and deliveries he'd completed around San Francisco. The Uber CEO said he would try to keep customers happy by offering phone charging cables and serving up Spotify playlists featuring artists including Taylor Swift and The National. Khosrowshahi told the Journal that some drivers had returned in response to economic uncertainty, which was yet to have an impact on rider demand.
CNN —After I parked a new 2023 Toyota Prius and walked away, I turned around to look at it. How could hybrids, vehicles that burn gasoline, reduce greenhouse gas emissions more than vehicles that burn no gasoline at all?. reducing emissions rather than just acting as an inducement to buy an electric car, pointed out Jason Keller, Toyota’s director of dealer policy in the US. Prices for the Toyota Prius, for instance, start at just $27,000, a price only a few electric vehicles, like the Chevrolet Bolt, can approach. Lexus, Toyota’s luxury brand, is expected to sell only electric vehicles by 2030.
Twitter’s Duty to Protect Free Speech

Defending free speech is easy when it’s speech you agree with. Defending speech you dislike, or speech that doesn’t advance your interests, is more challenging. But it is in exactly those uncomfortable situations that American democratic principles call on us to protect the free exchange of ideas and freedom of the press. Free speech is a foundational value of our democracy. Attacks on public officials and candidates for office have continued.
